Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists (FASRS)

The Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists (FASRS) designation is awarded to members in good standing who have demonstrated consistent commitment to the Society, expertise in the management of vitreoretinal disorders, and the highest ethical and professional standards.


Criteria for FASRS Designation

  • At least 5 continuous years as ASRS regular member in good standing (note: this period does not include time as a resident, FIT, or associate membership)
  • Attendance at 3 or more ASRS Annual Meetings (either in-person or virtual) during any 6-year period after becoming a regular member and prior to awarding of the FASRS designation. Attendance at the ASRS Business of Retina Meeting can substitute for attendance at up to one ASRS Annual Meeting

Alternate Route to FASRS Designation:

  • At least 3 continuous years as a regular member in good standing (note: this period does not include time as a resident, FIT, or associate membership)
  • Attendance at 3 or more ASRS Annual Meetings (either in-person or virtual) during any 6-year period after becoming a regular member and prior to awarding of the FASRS designation. Attendance at the ASRS Business of Retina Meeting can substitute for attendance at up to one ASRS Annual Meeting
  • Achieving 4 or more points from following list:
    • 1 point for contribution to an ASRS Annual Meeting or to the ASRS Business of Retina meeting. Limit of 1 point in any calendar year (lead author).
    • 1 point for serving for 2 or more years on an ASRS committee or board. Maximum of 3 points.
    • 1 point for an accepted publication (as lead author) in JVRD. Limit of 2 points in any calendar year.
    • 1 point for reviewing 3 or more submissions to JVRD. Limit of 2 points in any calendar year. 
    • 1 point for being a guest speaker on the JVRD Author's Forum Podcast (unless you received a point for lead authorship for the same article).
    • 1 point for authoring an exceptional new Retina Atlas chapter (at the discretion of the Retina Atlas committee). Limit of 2 points in any calendar year.

FASRS Maintenance Criteria:

FASRS designation must be renewed every 6 years.

  • Continuous status as a regular member in good standing. Plus: 
  • Attendance at a minimum of 3 ASRS Annual Meetings during each 6-year interval (attendance at the ASRS Business of Retina Meeting can substitute for attendance at up to one ASRS Annual Meeting).

Or

  • Achieving 2 or more points from the following list:
    • 1 point for contribution to an ASRS Annual Meeting or to the ASRS Business of Retina Meeting (paper, poster, course faculty, moderator). Limit of 1 point in any calendar year.
    • 1 point for serving for 2 or more years on an ASRS committee or board.
    • 1 point for an accepted publication in JVRD.
    • 1 point for reviewing 3 or more submissions to JVRD.
    • 1 point for being a guest speaker on the JVRD Author's Forum Podcast (unless you received a point for lead authorship for the same article).
    • 1 point for authoring an exceptional new Retina Atlas chapter (at the discretion of the Retina Atlas committee). Limit of 2 points in any calendar year.

 Application Process

The  annual FASRS application deadline is April 30, 2025. Those who qualify will be notified in mid-May and invited to add their new designation to their ASRS member profile, professional signature, practice website, etc.  Designees will receive a formal FASRS certificate by mail around the time of the ASRS Annual Meeting.
