A Tribute to Judy E. Kim, MD, FARVO, FASRS
Judy E. Kim, MD, FARVO, FASRS, is Professor of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she holds the Jean and Tom Walter Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology in Honor of James P. McCulley, MD. An internationally recognized vitreoretinal surgeon, she specializes in diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular surgery, and advanced ocular imaging.
A respected leader in ophthalmology, Dr. Kim serves as the 2026 President of the Macula Society, Secretary of the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research, and an Executive Board Member of both the Asia Pacific Retinal Imaging Society and Retina World Congress. She is Chair Emeritus of Women in Retina, a Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and a member of the American Ophthalmological Society and the Retina Society. She is a former Trustee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and served as ASRS President in 2022–2023, becoming only the second woman to lead the Society since its founding in 1982. She currently serves as Secretary of the ASRS Foundation Board.
Dr. Kim has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, delivered over 400 national and international presentations, and participated in more than 70 multicenter clinical trials. She has served as national study chair and executive committee member of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Retina Network and has dedicated her career to mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.
Her many honors include the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship, Medical College of Wisconsin Outstanding Faculty Service Awards, the Suzanne Véronneau-Troutman Award from Women in Ophthalmology, the Women Pioneer in Science Award, the AAO Lifetime Achievement Honor Award, multiple AAO Secretariat Awards, and the ASRS Senior Achievement Award. She is also a member of the Retina Hall of Fame, an ARVO Silver Fellow, and an inaugural ASRS Fellow.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Kim earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she was selected for the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute–National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and a fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kim has remained committed to advancing retina care through exceptional patient care, groundbreaking research, education, innovation, mentorship, and service to the profession.
