President Issues Executive Order Aimed at Reducing Drug Prices and Preventing Healthcare Mergers

Last week, President Biden issued an executive order (EO) on “Promoting Competition in the American Economy” that directs the executive branch to begin policy- and rule-making on a wide range of issues to increase economic competition. Among the healthcare provisions, the EO directs HHS to issue a comprehensive plan to reduce drug prices within 45 days and increase support for generic and biosimilar drugs. It also directs the FDA to begin importing drugs from Canada. Executive orders do not have the force of law, but provide an insight into the administration’s policy goals. ASRS plans to comment on the forthcoming drug price plan.
