FDA Panel Recommends Approval of Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System

On Friday, September 28, an FDA Ophthalmic Devices Advisory Panel voted unanimously for the FDA to approve the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, created by Second Sight Medical Products Inc.

The Argus II system takes a mini-recording camera housed on the subject’s glasses and sends a signal via electric pulses to the eyes. This signal is sent to the brain, which creates light and dark spots of the image, allowing patients to visualize the image in front of them—something that before would have been impossible. 

In 2011, Second Sight gained European approval for the Argus II, the first approval anywhere in the world for a retinal prosthesis.
