Biography
Dr Fred Chen is a clinician-academic in development of image analysis techniques and stem cell treatment for retinal diseases. He is a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon at Royal Perth Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital and the Lions Eye Institute. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles
He received PhD in retinal pigment epithelium transplantation at the University College of London and completed a surgical and medical retina fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2010.
He established an Ocular Tissue Engineering Laboratory in 2011 at the Lions Eye Institute, University of Western Australia. His group is actively involved in developing neural stem cell transplantation, disease modelling using iPSC and drug development for inherited retinal diseases. He also leads an imaging group that develops custom software for analysis of OCTA, fundus autofluorescence, adaptive optics retinal images and microperimetry outcomes. He is a co-inventor of VP-001, an antisense oligonucleotide treatment for RP11.
Dr Chen is a co Editor-in-Chief for Clinical Experimental Ophthalmology, ranked 6th amongst all ophthalmology journals.
