Biography
Caroline R. Baumal, MD, is a vitreoretinal surgeon based in Newton, Massachusetts. Her research interests include drug development and novel retinal imaging technologies, while her clinical focus encompasses advanced age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, and complex vitreoretinal surgery.
Dr. Baumal completed her undergraduate studies at McGill University, followed by medical school and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto. She then pursued dual fellowships—one in Medical Retina and Laser Research at the New England Eye Center in Boston and another in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Baumal has received numerous professional honors, including the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Crystal Apple Award from the American Society of Retinal Specialists, induction into the Retinal Hall of Fame, the Donald J. Gass Beacon of Sight Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Vit-Buckle Society.
A prolific author and dedicated educator, Dr. Baumal has published more than 185 peer-reviewed papers and 33 book chapters on retinal diseases, and she edited the Elsevier textbook Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy. She has taught and mentored over 69 vitreoretinal fellows and previously served as Director of Education and Residency Program Director at the New England Eye Center.
