Biography
Timothy W. Olsen, M.D. is a vitreoretinal (VR) surgeon, translational researcher, and founder whose career has been guided by a lifelong commitment to help people see.
Dr. Olsen graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kansas, completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota and retina fellowship at Emory University. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin, then was recruited to lead the retina service the William H. Knobloch Endowed Retina Chair at the University of Minnesota. From 2007 to 2016, he served as the F. Phinizy Calhoun Sr. Professor, Chairman of Ophthalmology; Director of the Emory Eye Center. He was then recruited to Mayo Clinic as Professor and Consultant in Rochester, Minnesota (2017-2024).
Over a 30-year academic career, Dr. Olsen has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, delivered nearly 500 national and international lectures, and secured more than $13.5 million in research funding. He was awarded six teaching awards from four universities and was voted “Top Doctor” in all four cities. He has served as President of the American Ophthalmological Society, Secretary for Quality of Care for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Executive Editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Olsen is currently Founder and CEO of EyeMacular Regeneration, Inc., a company developing novel surgical approaches to treat advanced, end-stage macular disease and develop precision surgical devices.
