Biography
John Niffenegger, M.D. is a board certified fellowship trained vitreoretinal surgeon in Sarasota, Retina Group of Florida. Dr. Niffenegger graduated from Harvard College magna cum laude and received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. His training in ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship was performed at Harvard Medical School's specialty eye hospital - The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. After completing his training Dr. Niffenegger stayed on as an attending ophthalmologist at the Eye and Ear Infirmary prior joining Retina Associates of Cleveland. Before moving to Sarasota in 2003, Dr. Niffenegger was Vice-president of Eye Centers of Ohio and President-elect of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Niffenegger continues to be an advocate for patients with eye disease. He has been on the board of the Manasota Light House for the Visually Impaired and was previously Vice-President of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Niffenegger has published scientific papers and book chapters concerning macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. He has spoken at national and international meetings. Together with Dr. Keye Wong and other colleagues Dr. Niffenegger has participated in national clinical trials for treatments of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, ocular melanoma, and retinopathy of prematurity.
