Biography

Dr. Maisel, founder of the Retina Group of New York, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who completed the Dyson fellowship in Vitreous and Retinal surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He has received a Special Congressional Award for his work in diabetic retinopathy and the Banko Gift of Sight Award. He also was named the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Humanitarian of the Year.

Dr. Maisel is Founder, and CEO of ZyDoc Medical Transcription and a serial entrepreneur. In Medical Informatics, he helped develop one of the first prototype multimedia EMRs that was licensed to the Department of Defense in 1994. He served as Chairman of HOST, a consortium of companies helping bring EMRs into practice, prior to its merger with HIMSS. He has participated in many industry and standards development efforts and is a frequent lecturer. In 2000, he led ZyDoc development of 17 specialty medical language models that were licensed to Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical launching speech recognition in the medical industry. Under his leadership, ZyDoc has won awards from the medical informatics, speech recognition and computing industries and a Special Congressional Award. He devised a NIH-Columbia University Sponsored Landmark EHR Usability Study generating NLP data from unstructured text facilitating data mining. This industry leading study compared keyboard and mouse data capture vs. dictation and section level data insertion into the EHR. ZyDoc’s dictation solution was 61% faster, easy to learn and use and produced rich documents with more content. ZyDoc improved this efficiency record with its AI ambient/dictation solutions designed for ophthalmology with EHR integrations. The service offers the ability to work in almost any language and we are looking for clinicians in multiple countries. ZyDoc was ranked second in clinical documentation services and sixth for their TrackDoc Connect enterprise cloud transcription platform in the 2020 Black Book™ Market Research vendors survey by 203 hospitals and 2,263 physician practices.

He has served as a Corporate Advisory Board member for the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Medical Advisory Board. He was also a member of the AAO Instrument and Device and Low Vision Committees and has received research grants from the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Maisel represented the National Society to Prevent Blindness at the ANSI Z-80 committee where he helped establish many ophthalmic industry standards. He served as an editor of EyeCare Technology Magazine and co-editor of Diabetes Technology Magazine. He also authored numerous professional journal articles and lectures nationally on the retina, medical informatics, and practice management topics. In addition, he has been a clinical investigator, consultant, educator, and advisory board member for Pfizer, Novartis, Genentech, Alimera, Regeneron, and Allergan, educating retinal specialists across the US.
