Biography

Professor Wai-Ching Lam is the Head, Medical Director, Ophthalmology Department, Vancouver General Hospital and University British Columbia Hospital; Clinical Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada.

Between 2016-2022, he was the Albert Bing-Ching Young Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Hong Kong; Chief of Service, Department of Ophthalmology, Queen Mary/Grantham Hospital, Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen, China.

He is a committed medical educator and received 16 teaching awards at the University of Toronto between 1996 to 2016. At the University of Toronto, he was the Residency Program Director (2001-2013), Vice Chair of Education (2013-2016), Continuing Education Director (1996-2016), and the Vitreo-retinal Fellowship Director (2002-2016)

Professor Lam is a vitreo-retinal surgeon with clinical expertise in adult and pediatric retinal diseases. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, authored 7 book chapters, and recently co-edited the book, “Quick Guide of Pediatric Retinal Diseases” in 2023. For his clinical and scientific work, he received the Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Asian Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Fellow and Senior Honor Award of the American Society of Retinal Specialists.
He is member of the Executive Board of Canadian Retina Society and current editorial member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He has been the council member of Asian Pacific Vitreoretinal Society, and member of the editorial board of Asian Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.
