Biography
Dr. Nikhil Bommakanti is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts Medical Center, a board-certified ophthalmologist, and a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal and vitreous disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. Dr. Bommakanti earned his M.D. from Columbia University following a research fellowship at the University of Oxford, after graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in bioengineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center, followed by a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, widely regarded as the top vitreoretinal training program in the United States. He has authored numerous publications and has received multiple honors, including election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the highest distinction for a medical student, and the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award, the most prestigious award for an ophthalmology trainee. Dr. Bommakanti is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, and is actively involved in training future retina specialists and conducting clinical research in retinal disease.
