Biography

Dr. David R.P. Almeida is a distinguished vitreoretinal surgeon and clinical scientist recognized for his extensive contributions to ophthalmic research and innovative patient care. He is Founder and Principal of Erie Retina Research and The Centers for Advanced Surgical Exploration (CASEx), where he leads pioneering clinical research initiatives worldwide. His primary research interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and the advancement of techniques for complex vitreoretinal surgery.

A prolific and respected thought leader, Dr. Almeida has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and delivered more than 200 presentations at major medical conferences worldwide. He has served as the Principal Investigator for over 150 clinical trials across all phases of development.

Dr. Almeida is at the forefront of developing next-generation treatments, particularly in the revolutionary field of gene therapy for retinal diseases. His work is critical to advancing the clinical application of adeno-associated virus (AAV) based vectors, a technology with the potential to offer a long-term or curative treatment for serious genetic eye disorders.

His entrepreneurial drive is evident through his multiple leadership roles. He is the co-founder of Citrus Therapeutics, a company focused on pharmaceutical lead compound research and development, and is leading innovative ventures, including ClinOmicsAI.

Dr. Almeida's exceptional qualifications provide a unique foundation for his multifaceted career. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and completed his ophthalmology residency at Queen's University in Canada. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Drug Research from the University of Szeged, Hungary, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare from The George Washington University. He completed a prestigious fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the University of Iowa. Dr. Almeida is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology (DABO) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).
