ASRS, Ophthalmic Community Reccomend CMS Exempt Ophthalmology From MIPS Diabetes Cost Measure

The  ASRS, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) sent a letter to CMS advising them that ophthalmologists are being inappropriately attributed the diabetes episode-based cost measure on their 2022 MIPS preview reports. ASRS participated in the development of the measure, which is intended to evaluate the clinician providing care for the patient’s underlying diabetes, rather than specialists managing co-morbidities, including retinal disease. We point out that there are inconsistencies in CMS’ guidance which may have contributed to this situation and recommend that the agency rectify the situation simply by exempting all ophthalmologists from the measure.
