ASRS Action Prevents CMS from Proposing Meaningless Ocular Care MIPS Value Pathway
This week, CMS released several proposed MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs) for public feedback and, at our urging, did not include an ocular care candidate that the agency had previously presented to ASRS and other ophthalmic groups. MVPs are pre-set groups of MIPS measures and activities centered around a condition or specialty and are CMS’ attempt to address community feedback that the MIPS program is too confusing and complicated. When presented with the draft ocular care MVP by CMS last year, ASRS, AAO and ASCRS noted that the draft was too broad and did not reflect the sub-specialization within ophthalmology. The draft ocular MVP also included the cataract surgery cost measure which would be irrelevant to retina specialists. ASRS recommended that CMS re-focus their efforts around cataract surgery and allow retina specialists to remain in traditional MIPS. Because CMS did not publicly release a draft this week, it is unlikely it will be included in the 2024 fee schedule and QPP rule.
