ASRS, AMA Oppose Federal Scope of Practice Legislation
ASRS, along with the AMA and dozens of other medical societies, recently sent a letter to the leadership of the House Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees strongly opposing the Improving Care and Access to Nurses Act (I CAN Act), H.R. 8812. If enacted, this legislation could dangerously expand the scope of practice for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other non-physician practitioners by expanding the type of services they can perform and could prevent Medicare and Medicaid from limiting the type of provider who can perform certain services. It is unlikely that this bill will be acted upon before the end of the Congress in December, however, we will maintain opposition if it is introduced again next year.
