ASRS, Ophthalmic Groups Prevent Unsafe CA Optometric Scope Expansion
Following pressure from ASRS and other ophthalmic and medical groups, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently vetoed legislation that would have dangerously expanded optometrists’ scopes of practice to include some surgical procedures and injections. In our letter to Gov. Newsom encouraging his veto, we argued that the limited hours of additional training the bill would have required for optometrists to perform surgical procedures was inadequate and fell far short of the years of training retina specialists and other ophthalmologists receive.
