House Energy and Commerce Committee Holds MA Oversight Hearing; ASRS, Alliance Reiterate Support for Prior Authorization Reform

This week, the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing, "Protecting America's Seniors: Oversight of Private Sector Medicare Advantage Plans" to investigate, among other things, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans’ use of prior authorization. The hearing was prompted by a recent HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) report that found MA plans were using prior authorization to deny medically-necessary care that would have been covered under original Medicare. Prior to the hearing, ASRS and the Alliance of Specialty Medicine sent a letter reiterating our support of bipartisan legislation to reform the prior authorization process in MA.
