Government Shutdown Expected; Medicare Claims Processing to Continue
Absent last-minute Congressional action, the federal government will shut down after midnight eastern time tonight. Medicare claims and payments will continue throughout the shutdown because funding for the program is mandatory and not subject to the annual appropriations process. CMS employees who are considered “non-essential,” however, will be furloughed through the shutdown. As a result of reduced staffing levels, Medicare providers could experience some delay in receiving payments and other services, such as Medicare enrollment applications.
