Biography

Dr. Ashkan Abbey graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University before earning his medical degree with honors at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. He completed his transitional residency at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, the nation’s top-ranked eye hospital. He then pursued fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, one of the country’s premier retina training programs. In 2015, Dr. Abbey joined Texas Retina Associates, where he was appointed Director of Clinical Research in 2020.

A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Abbey specializes in the diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of retinal and vitreous diseases. His clinical expertise encompasses age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular holes, retinopathy of prematurity, and other pediatric retinal disorders. He has also distinguished himself internationally as a leader in sutureless intrascleral fixation of intraocular lenses for eyes with insufficient capsular support—a novel technique he has helped pioneer through more than 1,000 surgeries, numerous peer-reviewed publications, and invited lectures at major international congresses.

Dr. Abbey’s scholarly contributions are extensive. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and national meeting abstracts, with research interests spanning multimodal therapies for retinal vascular disease and advanced surgical techniques in vitreoretinal disease. He serves as a manuscript referee for leading journals, including RETINA: The Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases, Ophthalmology Retina, Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases, and OSLI Retina. He also sits on the editorial boards of the ASRS Retina Atlas, Retina Specialist, Modern Retina, and Ophthalmic ASC.

A dedicated professional leader, Dr. Abbey is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, an elected member of the Retina Society, and an active member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He has twice received the Senior Honor Award of the American Society of Retina Specialists and has been named a “Best Doctor in Dallas” by D Magazine, a “Texas Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly, and one of “America’s Leading Doctors” by Newsweek. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, the Medical Executive Committee of the Ophthalmology Surgery Center of Dallas, and as Course Director for the Third Coast Retina Meeting.
