ICD-10 Snafu Prompts CMS to  Forego Penalties  on Physicians

CMS has announced that updates made to ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes in October of last year affected their ability to process data for certainly quality measures for the 4th quarter of CY 2016. As a result, the agency said in a statement that it "will not apply the 2017 or 2018 PQRS payment adjustments, as applicable, to any EP or group practice that fails to satisfactorily report for CY 2016 solely as a result of the impact of ICD-10 code updates on quality data reported for the 4th quarter of CY 2016."

Issues with reporting under the new ICD-10 codes were brought to light by the ASRS and shared with the American Medical Association. The AMA alerted CMS which is in part what prompted the agency's response this week.

CMS has developed an FAQ document to assist with related questions. Use this link for more information on ICD-10.
