In 2012, ASRS launched Retina 20/20, a public education campaign designed to support the goals of the federal government’s Healthy People 2020 – which is aimed at improving the overall health of Americans. Among its many goals, Healthy People 2020 seeks to raise awareness of treatments for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy – two conditions retina specialists frequently treat.
Retina 20/20 seeks to reduce much of the visual impairment which otherwise can occur from untreated age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The campaign helps patients learn more about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy; promotes research to find new treatments, and actively disseminates information about clinical breakthroughs that will improve the lives of patients.
The Retina 20/20 campaign is working with patient groups, healthcare organizations and the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health to promote early detection and treatment. Please visit this website often to receive regular updates on how you can prevent and treat diseases of the retina.
