ASRS Founders Award

To recognize excellence in vitreoretinal medicine, The American Society of Retina Specialists presents its Founders Lecture Award to individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery, treatment, research, surgical instrumentation, and patient care.

The Founders Lecture Award was first presented in 1997 to honor the efforts of the founding members of the Society, Drs. Jerald A. Bovino, Roy A. Levit, and Allen Z. Verne, for their foresight, dedication, and leadership in establishing the Society as an open, democratic, worldwide organization dedicated to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery and the study of vitreoretinal diseases.

The ASRS is proud to recognize Emily Y. Chew, MD as the 2009 recipient of the Founders Award.

ASRS Gertrude D. Pyron Award

The Pyron Award was created by the Retina Research Foundation to recognize outstanding vision scientists whose work contributes to knowledge about vitreoretinal disease. The Award offers a cash prize that includes a personal honorarium and a research grant. It is presented each year at the ASRS Annual Meeting, and the recipient is chosen by the ASRS Awards Committee.

The Pyron Award has been endowed by an estate gift from Gertrude D. Pyron of San Antonio, Texas. She was an eminent geologist during her lifetime, and made her bequest to RRF because of her admiration for Dr. Alice McPherson’s leadership in vision science.

Retina Research Foundation was founded in 1969 by Dr. Alice McPherson, a member of the ASRS, to establish and fund programs for the eradication of vitreoretinal disease. It is a public charity based in Houston, Texas, that has grown with support from a few community leaders to a major foundation, with broad support, funding a grant program, a major awards program, a career development program, and annual support for several research chairs.

The ASRS and the RRF are proud to recognize C.P. Wilkinson, MD with the 15th Annual Gertrude D. Pyron Award for Outstanding Achievement in Retina Research.

Retina Society
J. Donald M. Gass Award

The Retina Society inaugurated the J. Donald M. Gass lectureship in 2006. Dr. Gass was a peerless observer of the fundus. His unique and repeated ability to identify fundamental patterns of disease from the mass of seemingly chaotic details invites sincere comparison to Michelangelo working in marble. With this lectureship, we honor his memory as a warm and cherished member and friend as well as his inestimable importance to our patients and our field. The Retina Society is proud to recognize Philip J. Rosenfeld, MD, PhD with the 4th Annual J. Donald M. Gass Award.

Retina Research Foundation Award of Merit

The Retina Society’s Award of Merit in Retina Research was created in 1978 by the Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas. This Award of Merit recognizes outstanding vision scientists whose work contributes to knowledge about the retina and retinal diseases. The Retina Research Foundation, through a series of endowed gifts, provides funding for the Award of Merit. The Award is presented to a vision scientist whose work represents a single outstanding achievement in retina research or, a potentially significant contribution to new knowledge about the retina, its role in the visual process and/or vitreoretinal diseases or disorders.

Each year, the Award of Merit in Retina Research recipient delivers the Charles L. Schepens Lecture that was established in honor of the founder of the Retina Society.

The Retina Society is proud to recognize Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD with the 31st Annual Retina Research Foundation Award of Merit.

Retina Society Fellowship Research Award and Margherio Award

The Retina Society’s Fellowship Research Award was established in 1996 to encourage academic pursuit in young vitreoretinal surgeons and to acquaint them with the scientific and social aspects of The Retina Society. This Award is given annually to one or more vitreoretinal fellows of an Active Member of the Retina Society for outstanding original work in any aspect of vitreoretinal disease.

The Retina Society’s Margherio Award is given annually to a vitreoretinal fellow of an Active Member of the Retina Society. The award was established in honor of Raymond R. Margherio, MD and has been supported for the past eight years by The Raymond R. Margherio Endowed Memorial Fund, which was established to support research into macular disease and development of new techniques of macular surgery.

To be considered for either of these prestigious awards, current vitreoretinal fellows of active Retina Society members, including those graduating in June 2009, may submit an abstract through the Retina Congress 2009 Abstract Submission System (note that you must be a member of one of the three societies to submit an abstract). In addition, candidates must also email a full manuscript to retinasoc@aol.com no later than May 15, 2009.

An active member of the Retina Society must sponsor the author and each paper is judged on originality, quality of investigation methods, and merit of scientific contribution. These awards carry a stipend that will cover normal travel and lodging costs to attend Retina Congress 2009. In addition, the award winners will present their work at Retina Congress 2009 and their registration fee will be waived. All abstracts will be considered for both awards, with the final selection made by The Retina Society Awards Committee.
