ASRS Award Lectures

Founders Award Lecture

Kirk H. Packo, MDTo recognize excellence in vitreoretinal medicine, The American Society of Retina Specialists presents its Founders Lecture Award to individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery, treatment, research, surgical instrumentation, and patient care.

The Founders Lecture Award was first presented in 1997 to honor the efforts of the founding members of the Society, Drs. Jerald A. Bovino, Roy A. Levit, and Allen Z. Verne, for their foresight, dedication, and leadership in establishing the Society as an open, democratic, worldwide organization dedicated to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery and the study of vitreoretinal diseases.

The ASRS is proud to recognize Kirk H. Packo, MD as the 2006 recipient of the ASRS Founders Award. Dr. Packo will present "Vitrectomy Technology - Where We've Been. Where We Are. Where We Are Going" on Monday, September 11, 2006 from 8:40am - 9:10am.

The Gertrude D. Pyron Award Lecture

Brooks W. McCuen, II, MDThe Pyron Award was created by the Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas, to recognize outstanding vision scientists whose work contributes to knowledge about vitreoretinal disease. The Award offers a cash prize that includes a personal honorarium and a research grant. It is presented each year at the ASRS Annual Meeting, and the recipient is chosen by the ASRS Awards Committee.

The Pyron Award has been endowed by an estate gift from Gertrude D. Pyron of San Antonio, Texas. She was an imminent geologist during her lifetime, and made her bequest to RRF because of her admiration for Dr. Alice McPherson's leadership in vision science.

Retina Research Foundation was founded in 1969 by Dr. Alice McPherson, a member of The Vitreous Society, to establish and fund programs for the eradication of vitreoretinal disease. It is a public charity based in Houston, Texas, that has grown with support from a few community leaders to a major foundation, with broad support, funding a grant program, a major awards program, a career development program, and annual support for several research chairs.

The ASRS and the RRF are proud to recognize Brooks W. McCuen, II, MD with the 12th Annual Gertrude D. Pyron Award for Outstanding Achievement in Retina Research. Dr. McCuen will present "Evolving Concepts in Pharmacologic Vitreolysis" on Monday, September 11, 2006 from 8:05am - 8:35am.

Anti-Angiogenesis Symposium

The Anti-Angiogenesis Symposium will feature 3 sessions (Symposium I, II, and III) of papers presenting results of studies on the use of antiVEGF agents in age-related macular degeneration. Symposium I will focus on results of clinical trials on Ranibizumab for AMD.  This will be followed by our keynote lecture from Dr. Judah Folkman, "the father of angiogenesis research." Symposia II and III will feature more papers on antiVEGF therapy, including agents such as Ranibizumab, Bevacizumab, the VEGF trap, and the sIRNA drugs.  In all, over 40 papers will comprise this tripartite symposium, the largest presentation ever in this field at a retina meeting. The objectives of the symposium are to update attendees on the background of anti-angiogenesis research, its current state, and future directions, and to provide both a basic science grounding and a clinical perspective.

Young Physicians Section Symposium

This symposium will present topics of interest geared toward retinal specialists recently out of fellowship.  This year the ASRS YPS has the unique and exciting opportunity to hold a joint meeting with the YPS of the EVRS.  The symposium will offer an informal forum to present topics discussing the various challenges facing young retinal specialists in both continents.

The symposium fosters substantial discussion, and also allows more senior ASRS/EVRS members the opportunity to impart "pearls of the trade" to recently trained retinal specialists. In addition to clinical management issues, topics will cover the business, political, and off-the-beaten-path side of vitreoretinal practice.

The discussion will be presented in an enjoyable, lively, and highly interactive format. Moderators will be ASRS YPS Co-Chairs, Sundeep Dev & Ingrid Scott; EVRS YPS Co-Chairs: Manal Bouhaimed, Mario Facino, Sean Lee & Fabio Patelli.

Harry W. Flynn, Jr, MDEach year, the ASRS' Young Physicians Section presents the Crystal Apple Award to an ASRS member who has gone to great lengths to advance the education and professional development of young vitreoretinal specialists. The 2006 Crystal Apple Award winner is Harry W. Flynn, Jr, MD, who will present "Controversies in the Management and Prevention of Endophthalmitis" at the 2006 YPS Lunch Meeting to be held in Cannes on Sunday, September 10.

Retina Poster Festival

Vitreoretinal surgery undoubtedly is an art form. There is unfathomed creative talent in every one of us. How befitting for the Cannes Retina Festival!

Since the 1930s there has been a yearly competition every year for the official poster of the Cannes Film Festival. Creativity is the hallmark of this competition and the organizers of the Cannes Retina Festival are appealing to that talent in ASRS and EVRS members.

The venue chosen for the meeting will stimulate an unprecedented number of film festival entries. Why not complement this with a visually stimulating film poster to call attention to your film? Or you can enter a poster on its own, advertising this or future vitreoretinal meetings. All posters will be displayed throughout the festival and, of course, stand to win one of the prizes. So, let your creative juices flow and start your preparations for Cannes now.

Registered participants may submit up to two posters.  Prizes will be awarded at the gala dinner in each of four categories:

  1. Posters advertising the Cannes Retina Festival
  2. Posters advertising Film Festival films
  3. Educational message (please no scientific posters!)
  4. Ophthalmological humor

Poster festival submission guidelines: Size - minimum DIN A1 (23in x 33in); file requirements – Tiff, JGP, or Photoshop (minimum 5000 x 7000 pixels) formats submitted on a CD. Deadline for entries is May 31. Send your entry to:
